| | Scar Treatment and Silicone Gel Sheets
When are Silicone Gel Dressings used? Silicone gel dressings prevent the formation of excessive scar tissue, sometimes called keloids by preventing moisture from entering the scar area. If the moisture at the scar area is reduced, there is less blood flow which then leads to less collagen at the scar area. This reduction in collagen is critical to ideal scar formation because collagen is the material that makes up the tough scar tissue. By reducing collagen at the scar area, the scar becomes paler, which means it will be closer in color to the healthy skin surrounding the scar. This, in turn, makes the scar less visible.
