Nursing Bra Fitting Guidelines

$0.00

While breastfeeding, a new mother will find that she suddenly requires many more features of her bra than she used to.

Why a Nursing Bra?

According to the latest medical and psychological research, breastfeeding not only has a beneficial effect on the baby's physical development, but also on its intelligence.

  • Mother's milk protects the baby against infections and allergies
  • The close physical contact during breastfeeding gives the baby a feeling of security
  • Breastfeeding has a beneficial effect on the baby's intelligence, as suckling stimulates the nerve and muscle function
  • For the mother, breastfeeding provides protection against infection and reduces the risk of bleeding after birth
  • The breastfeeding hormones help restore the womb to its normal shape
  • The additional calorie consumption aids weight loss

A functional, well-designed nursing bra is necessary to maintain the shape and support of the bust during the breastfeeding period. Nursing bras are made from skin-kind materials as breasts and nipples can be extra-sensitive during this time.

When Should I Start Wearing a Nursing Bra?

Nursing bras should not be purchased before the beginning of the 8th month, as the bust stops growing around this time.

We recommend choosing a cup size larger than the existing size at this point. The underbust band should fit loosely on the widest setting. If necessary, check the measurements again using the guidelines below.

Your Band Size Measurement :

Without a bra on, measure around your body directly under the bustline. If the measurement is an odd number, add 5 inches. If it is even, add 4 inches. This is your band size. You can refer to the last chart on this page to help you find your band size.

Your Cup Size Measurement:

Without a bra on, measure around the fullest part of your breast. The resulting difference equates to your cup size as follows:

1 inchA Cup
2 inchesB Cup
3 inchesC Cup
4 inchesD Cup
5 inchesDD Cup

Determine Your Bra Size By How Your Current Bra Fits:
  • If your bra rides up in the back:
You need a smaller band size
  • If your band digs in:
You need one band size larger
  • If your cups overflow:
You need one cup size larger
  • If your shoulders ache:
Loosen your bra or opt for a bra with wider or cushioned straps (See Strap Accessories)
  • If your bustline sags:
Shorten the straps, avoid stretchy fabrics, or choose a firmer support style with rigid straps
  • If your straps slip:
Tighten your straps or opt for a bra with wider straps
  • If the underwire pinches or pokes you:
The cup size is wrong and you need to try a size smaller or larger
