Skin Wellness
Problem 1: Skin redness, rashes and bedsores are often caused by urine creating a wet environment next to the skin in collaboration with certain bacteria and enzymes.

Attends Solution: Attends’ Perma-Dry® fibers in the absorbent core of the product rapidly channel urine away from the skin surface into the absorbent core. The unique design of the core provides increased resiliency and continues to function even after multiple voids.

Problem 2: Typical healthy skin has a pH ranging from 4.2 to 5.6. At this range skin has the ability to inhibit bacterial growth of foreign, pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Fresh urine typically has a pH range of 5.0 to 8.0 with variations due to diet, illness, and medications. Over time the pH of discharged urine on or near the skin will begin to drift upwards on the scale. The higher the pH the faster the bacterial growth will occur.

Attends Solution: Attends’ Perma-Dry fibers provide three beneficial effects:

1) stabilizes the pH of urine in the range of 4.0 to 5.0, which retards the pathogen growth.
2) lowers the pH level which reduces the activity level of damaging enzymes and skin irritants (lipease and protease).
3) a lower pH level also reduces the transmission of harmful bacteria from the outer layer of skin to the lower levels where infections occur.

Dryness -

Problem: Excess moisture on the skin surface can lead to skin maceration (pruning of the skin) which breaks down the skin’s barrier properties. This can lead to the development of perineal dermatitis or pressure ulcers (skin breakdown).

Attends Solution: Attends with Perma-Dry rapidly channels the wetness away from the skin, pulling the wetness to the lower absorbent core more quickly.

Odor Control -

Problem: The odor of incontinence often leads to embarrassment for both the nursing home and the incontinent person. Odor is caused by certain bacteria and the build up of ammonia as a result of increased pH.

Attends Solution: By reducing the pH of the urine that has entered the absorbent core, the Attends product retards the development of the bacteria and ammonia that lead to increased odor. Other manufacturers attempt to achieve pH reduction through the use of absorbent polymers (SAP or AGM), claiming they reduce urine pH levels. These products do have the ability to reduce pH of urine somewhat, but NOT to the same degree that Attends with Perma-Dry does. Only Attends reduces urine pH to levels that are consistent with the pH level of skin!
