Jobst UlcerCARE Zippered Stocking and Liner (114485)
January 20, 2014
I first heard of and used a Jobst Stocking back in the 1970’s after vein ligation surgery. Back then, the type of stocking I used was one that was made for me. I had to go to the doctor’s office and both legs were meticulously measured and the tapes sent to Jobst for fabrication. Back then there were no liners, just an opened toe stocking that fit like my own skin. They were difficult to use but they worked. And that’s the important thing to me. Well, jump ahead to 2013. My present doctor and I had discussed Jobst stockings on several occasions and I was under the impression that at some point I would be fitted for a stocking, just like in the old days. Although Jobst apparently still does the “made to order” stockings, I came across these at Metro Medical Online. I had never heard of the UlcerCARE line of stocking before and I was intrigued. I took the information with me to my next doctor visit. My doctor was familiar with Jobst stockings and she gave me her approval. I had been using unna boot bandages for about 4 years, which had been effective for a while, but it was as those I had reached a plateau with them. The ulcers on both legs weren’t getting any better, and in some cases worse. Enter the Jobst UlcerCARE stocking. The first one I ordered was the ones that were discontinued, and thus on sale. I figured if they didn’t work out I wouldn’t be out quite as much. Although this review is about the NEW UlcerCARE stocking I first started with the older model. I have bilateral ulcers, but I started using the Jobst stocking on my left leg which had had an open ulcer for almost two years. I wore this stocking per the instructions. I took it off at night and put it back on before I got up in the morning. Sometimes I would sleep with the liner on and just put the outer stocking on before I got up. It was comfortable to wear and I thought it was a good thing that I could change my dressing twice per day, something that I couldn‘t do with the unna boot dressing. The new liner really aides in putting on the outer stocking and in helping to keep the dressing in place. I started wearing the stocking in mid June 2013, and by mid October, my left leg ulcer had closed, for the first time in about 2 years. I continue to wear the Jobst UlcerCARE stocking and I haven’t had any trouble with my left leg since. As I mentioned, when I first started I had purchased the older model. I probably would have been better off to have gotten the newer model with all the improvements that have been made to it. For instance, the older model is very similar to the fabric that was used back in the 1970’s. The newer model has a special design pattern that provides more friction to the liner, yielding better compression. The new liner is greatly improved from the older model liner as well. The difference between them is like daylight and dark. The one area that I thought was a bit disappointing concerning the newer model stocking, was that the zipper doesn’t go all the way up. I think it would be better and easier to put on if the zipper went all the way up the stocking like the older model stocking does. Subsequently, I’ve purchased the model without the zipper. It’s probably no surprise that I highly recommend the Jobst UlcerCARE stocking with liner. I’ve been doing my own womb care for a long time, sometimes with a physician‘s help and sometimes not. At one time or another, I’ve tried just about everything. For all the good things that anyone can do, like eating a good diet, keeping your legs elevated, and generally doing all the right things, with venous stasis ulcers, it’s all about the compression. All things being equal, it’s the compression that will make the difference. These Jobst stockings have worked wonders for me and I highly recommend them. They’re made in the USA as well.
